Is whitening suitable for me?

Generally, Whitening is successful in at least 90 percent of patients. Consider tooth bleaching if your teeth are darkened from age, coffee, tea, or smoking. Other types of gray stains caused by fluorosis, smoking, or tetracycline are lightened, but results are not as dramatic. Which teeth are not suitable for whitening?

Front teeth that have fillings are not suitable for bleaching.

The natural tooth and the filling are composed of different substances. So, dentist can change the fillings after whitening.

Heavy tetracycline staining will not respond to bleaching. Dentists prefer to cover these stained teeth with veneers.

Teeth that have had root canal treatments often discolor internally. They may respond to internal bleaching. The tooth is opened, and the bleach is applied.

Is the whitening effective in all cases?

Bleaching will not lighten some stains, such as tetracycline stains. In this case, your dentist may recommend covering the discolored areas. This also may be useful when the tooth is chipped or badly damaged.

How Does the Bleaching Process Work?

Bleaching gels usually contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When applied to human teeth, peroxide molecules go into the tiny pores of the enamel and dentin, break down into oxygen molecules and break up the stains that block out the light. More and more light passes through the teeth and they appear lighter.

Yellow to slightly brown extrinsic stains that accumulate over time respond best to bleaching.

Whitening toothpaste

Whitening toothpastes may remove minor stains. They do not actually change the overall color of your teeth. And it’s not recommended to use whitening paste daily.

How do whitening toothpastes work? How effective are they at whitening teeth?

Most toothpastes help remove surface stains through the action of mild abrasives. Some whitening toothpastes contain gentle polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains only and do not contain bleach; over the counter and professional whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching substance) that helps remove stains on the tooth surface as well as stains deep in the tooth. None of the home use whitening toothpastes can come even close to producing the bleaching effect you get from your dentist’s office.

What are the types of Whitening you have?

Laser Whitening, Zoom whitening, In-office chemical whitening and home whitening.

What is the difference between the different types?

Laser whitening is strong, fast with the least sensitivity, though is more expensive. Zoom Whitening is strong, takes 1-2 sessions to reach 4-6 lighter shade and is less expensive than Laser, both types give whitening that is stable for more than a year. While chemical and home types are less concentrated, do not last more than 6 months, suitable for young age or to augment or intensify the action of the other types in case of teeth with strong stains.

Home bleaching

It is possible to remove discoloration at home. You will use a bleaching gel and a mouth guard given to you by your dentist. The bleaching gels designed for use at home are not as strong as those applied by your dentist. This means that the process takes longer — usually two to four weeks.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening

You can buy whitening products over the counter. They contain a weaker bleach than the products you can get from your dentist & not 100% safe.

What is Power or light whitening

Discoloration often can be removed by applying a bleaching agent to the teeth. One technique is called “power bleaching.” With this method, the dentist applies a light-activated bleaching gel. It causes the teeth to get significantly whiter in about 30 to 45 minutes. Several follow-up treatments may be needed, or take-home bleaching trays may be provided.

How long does it last?

Lightness should last for about one to five years depending on your personal habits such as smoking and drinking coffee and tea. After two years, you could use a touch up. The procedure will not be as costly the next time because you can probably still use the same mouth guard. The retreat time also is much shorter than the original treatment time.

Is whitening permanent?

Whitening is not a permanent solution. The stains will come back. If you smoke or consume a lot of staining foods or drinks. If you avoid these sources of staining, you may not need another whitening treatment for 6 to 12 months.

What follow-up is needed?

After in-office whitening, your dentist may want to see you in a few days to check on your gums. If whitening your teeth at home under a dentist-supervised process, your dentist may want to check your gums and your teeth whitening progress after about a week of applications and again a couple weeks later.

Side effects of whitening

 

Whitening is unlikely to cause serious side effects, although some people’s teeth may become more sensitive for a short while. You may get mild gum irritation as well. Women should not have their teeth whitened while pregnant. The effect of the whitening materials on the development of the fetus is not known. Since the procedure is cosmetic, it should be postponed until after delivery.

Can I make Whitening frequently every year?

Re-whitening can be done in the dentist’s office or at home. If you have a custom-made mouthpiece and whitening agent at home, you can whiten your teeth as frequently as you need to. Discuss your whitening schedule with your dentist. You can talk about what whitening products would work best for you.
